The Reason You Need To Stop Making New Year's Resolutions

2019, the year of no resolutions. How many years have you spent the end of December thinking about what resolutions you want to set for the upcoming year? A new year, a new start. Fresh new resolutions, or recycled ones that fizzled out from the previous year. This year I’m encouraging you to stop making New Year’s resolutions. What I am suggesting instead, set goals!

Resolutions are promises that we make to ourselves, but quickly forgo. Does this ring a bell? I know all too well that I have found myself in the past going into a new year with bold aspirations, only to have realized my resolutions were either too grandiose to follow through with, or like most a fitness plan I simply can’t maintain. Plus, who are you really disappointing? Oh, just that person in the mirror. No big deal, right? Wrong.

For the past few years, my husband and I have implemented a new way to start off each year. We created what we have deemed a “Personal Business Plan.” At the end of December we sit down and think of things we want to accomplish over the course of the upcoming year. This plan helps us to set goals with a 12 month (or shorter) window. We go into each new year with a fresh set of goals and sometimes ones we want to continue to nurture.

Wondering what the heck is a Personal Business Plan (P.B.P.)?

It’s simply a checks and balances for the most important things you want in your life. The purpose of this is to set goals, NOT resolutions.

The benefits of this plan verses ordinary resolutions is the structure. You have something to work towards and the biggest bonus: you’re sharing your most important goals with someone. This doesn’t have to be your spouse. It can be anyone who is close to you, and who you trust to keep you accountable.

Did you notice the last word above? Accountable. That’s the one! I bet that’s a big factor into why your past resolutions have failed. You didn’t entrust anyone to help keep you accountable and check in with you.

Another added bonus to creating a P.B.P. is creating a dialogue with that trusted person in your life. You get to share what you really want to get going in the upcoming year. It could be as simple as making a goal to drink more water or as big as setting a goal to climb and summit Mt. Kilimanjaro! That was an actual goal my husband set for himself in 2017. I am happy (and proud) to report that he worked his butt off to conquer that goal! Nineteen THOUSAND three hundred forty one feet were no competition for that guy (okay, maybe a little).

Here are a couple of insider tips for achieving the ultimate success for smashing your 2019 GOALS:

1. Don’t Overdue It

Stick to a handful of categories to focus on. The main things I chose to focus on last year were: family, career, travel, personal development, community outreach, and finances. Since I now have some experience creating a P.B.P., I feel confident upping the amount of things I wanted to tackle this year. The first year I started out with just four categories. Slowly build up over time. If you bite off more than you can chew, chances are you’ll get discouraged. Don’t let that happen. Slow and steady wins the race!

2. Be Detailed

Once you have written down the categories you’d like to focus on, get specific on the details. If you want to focus on date night, pick a night every week, bi-weekly, monthly, etc. Put it in your calendar and stick to it. Success is in those details. The more information you can write down on how you’ll reach your end goal the more attainable those goals become. Create your own light at the end of the tunnel through the details. If you can see a way to conquer your goal, you’re more than half way there.

3. Schedule Check-ins

This is the most important step in the process. Schedule time with your P.B.P. partner, at least once a month to check-in on each others progress or dare I say retrogression. This is the accountability part and the secret key to making this goal setting plan work! Do not skimp on this part.
